After RNC Succesfully Hounded Dems into Demanding Al Franken’s Resignation its Backing Roy Moore Again
If you are at all surprised by this you haven’t been paying so much attention. All it took was for Donald Trump to endorse Roy Moore and the floodgates opened. Orrin Hatch said the allegations against Roy Moore was ‘a long time ago.’
“The Republican National Committee is reversing course and once again backing Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, after initially pulling its support following allegations of sexual misconduct.”
“The reversal, first reported by the far-right Breitbart News and confirmed by a senior RNC official, comes the same day President Donald Trump formally endorsed Moore. The race has been rocked by accusations that Moore made sexual advances toward underage girls while he was in his 30s. He has denied the allegations.”
“The move puts the RNC at odds with the Senate Republican campaign arm, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which also withdrew from the joint fundraising committee. NRSC Chairman Cory Gardner has called on Moore to step aside as the nominee, and said Moore should be expelled from the Senate if elected.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said shortly after the allegations broke nearly four weeks ago, “The recent allegations against Judge Moore are deeply troubling. He should step aside if there is any truth to them at all.”
But as for the Democrats it’s time to change the party’s logo to Charlie Brown with the GOP as Lucy with the football. I’ve argued since the Franken charges broke that the asymmetric nature of the parties means that perversely the GOP is going to end up winning on the politics of #MeToo.
Well now we see that borne out: game-set-match.
I-and Richard Painter-had warned the Dems.
Painter as a Republican knows all about the history of Paula Jones-she was paid by the Right wing groups like the Arkansas Project-which used to pay Arkansas state troopers to make up stories of Bill making them find him girls. Her case would have died in 1994 if not for their money.
Yet liberals fall for this every time. They insist on arguing that they have to do this or their ‘no better than the GOP.’
This is totally wrongheaded. For my part my priority is not proving that I’m better than the GOP-honestly it’s pretty hard not to be that. What I care about, what the aspiration of this party should be is to beat the GOP.
To make sure that things like the GOP #TaxScamBill never happen again. How do you do that? Not by preening how morally superior you obviously are to the GOP-it’s virtually impossible not to be as they are sociopaths-but defeating these clowns at the ballot box.
So let’s take an inventory of what the Dems have done vs what the GOP has done regarding sexual harassment.
1. Dems have:
A). drummed Harvey Weinstein out of public life-and I’m sure not saying he doesn’t deserve it but let’s be clear: the GOP would NEVER have done that.
B). Called for John Conyers resignation, an ethics investigation be damned. This is the premise of you have to believe the woman. The premise behind this is very true: for far too long women who have been sexually harassed and assaulted have been presumed to be lying.
So this idea is fine and good. However, in practice what does it mean? Does it mean that we now believe in this one species of crime or misconduct that you’re guilty until proven innocent?
Going back to the 1990s the GOP had already figured out how this is the perfect wedge issue against the Dems. After all, if the awfulness of the charges-in lieu of proving them-is all that matters then the Democrats were morally obligated to demand Bill Clinton’s resignation, no questions asked.
In the case of Conyers it seems quite plausible to me that he probably is guilty of the basic charges. Note he hasn’t been accused of sexual harassment as such just gross workplace inappropriateness. Like he would walk into meetings in his underwear, etc.
Still two things are notable:
a). No way would the GOP demand his ouster in lie of hearings. Heck, they probably wouldn’t even after he was clearly implicated in hearings.
b.) The initial story about the payments Conyers made to his accusers was leaked by Pizzagate’s own Mike Cernovich
You can dismiss Cernovich but he’s winning. He just got Sam Seder fired from MSNBC for a 2009 tweet taking out of context.
Again I maintain: to defeat the Devil you don’t have to first prove you’re an angel as the progressives seem to think.. To the contrary an angel won’t ever defeat the Devil.
C). A number Dems have called not just for Conyers to resign-everyone is calling for him to resign, from Nancy Pelosi to even Jim Clyburn-but Al Franken.
Even the accusations against Franken are much less serious than not only Roy Moore-what can be more serious than assault on a minor?-but Conyers.
While many of Conyer’s former staffers talk about how inappropriately he behaved in the workplace you have had MANY former aides and colleagues of Franken speak of him in glowing terms.
The pattern of the charges seem to be: Franken takes a picture with a woman. She’s clearly agreed to be in the picture and there’s no attempt to hide anything-as it’s public. In the future she claims that somehow he touched her inappropriately-though it’s not clear how in the picture itself. Which is not to say he didn’t, just that it’s not obvious from looking at it.
There are also legitimate questions about some of the accusations. Like with Leann Tweeden it’s clear they were two comedians out doing skits that were intended to be a little ‘bawdy.’
There ARE also pictures of Tweeden herself grabbing a guitar player’s behind. But the assumption seems to be that only a man can touch a woman inappropriately not the other way around.
If she does it it’s empowerment, if he does it it’s sexual assault. Some of the other accusers seemed to be Republicans in the first place who were perhaps predisposed to speak of him in the worst light.
It was basically Republican women cat-fishing Weiner that totally brought him down.
Again the appropriate response to Franken charges is clearly to have an investigation. Because so much of the context is strange and questionable. And because we believe in due process.
D). Some go as far as Kirsten Gillibrand and Bill de Blasio who are somehow trying to go back in time and retroactively demand Bill Clinton resign.
That’s a productive use of time and is clearly the best way to end sexual assault. Much better than talking about current assualters in office.
2. The GOP on the other hand has:
A). Kept Clarence Thomas in office. No one is demanding that he step down. If Bill Clinton years ago should have resigned then why shouldn’t Clarence Thomas step down today?
B). Kept David Vitter in the Senate
C). Elevated Donald Trump to their standard bearer.
D). Has now re-embraced Roy Moore.
Ok, so that’s the RNC-the NRSC hasn’t done so yet. But they will.
If you will help them pass their regressive and socially reactionary agenda the GOP will endorse Manson himself-Trump isn’t far from that in the political realm.
P.S. I’m Mike Sax, I’m running for Congress in the NY 2nd District and I’m a Hillary Clinton Democrat.
Meeting her recently was one of the biggest honors in my life to stand next to such a fine public servant and trailblazer. She seemed to like our Impeachment Train campaign t shirts too!
Think of the shirt as a one time investment in restoring legitimacy to this country.
And please donate so we can compete with Peter King’s $4 million. I know no lobbyists or millionaires like Peter King. Small donations are the engine of the Mike Sax NY2 campaign. Together we can do it. Because we must.
