Elijah Cummings Says it: This is a Fight for the Soul of Our Democracy
There is just no question that Trump’s defenders both in Congress and in the Right wing media have ratcheted up their rhetoric to 11 the last few weeks. Fox has called Mueller’s probe a coup. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is now calling the Russia probe a hoax.
She says Obama needs to be investigated. We now know the GOP House-under the urecused leadership of Devin Nunes is now running a secret parallel investigation into the FBI and DOJ. They are claiming the ‘real crime’ was that the FBI ever handled the dossier at all.
The GOP has also become fixated on Andy McCabe who’s second at the FBI. Because his wife donated to Terry McAuliffe they are claiming he’s biased. This in itself is the GOP imposing a political test on members of the FBI. By this logic Comey-a life long Republican who donated to both of Obama’s Presidential opponents-should never have been allowed to run the Clinton email probe.
One of the biggest jokes is the idea that the FBI favored Clinton.
Yet this is what they GOP is now claiming based on their behind closed door meeting with McCabe.
FAVORABLY?I The FBI stole the election from her

I mean the FBI was Trumpland during the election. The Comey letter won it for Trump. The Clinton email probe leaked to the public the day it started in July 2015 whereas we didn’t hear conclusively about the Russia probe until eight months after it started-four months after the election.
There’s no question the GOP is laying the groundwork for something here. Bill Palmer argues the GOP is not laying it out for firing Mueller just discrediting his report once it comes out.
So that’s the optimistic scenario here… That they’re not going to let Trump fire Mueller just lay the groundwork to criticize his report when it comes out.
And-who knows-maybe that’s correct. Let’s hope it is. But hope is not a strategy. From my standpoint that this is the road to firing Mueller can’t be ignored as a real possibility.
And the way leading Democrats are acting, it seems like they think it’s real possibility.
“Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) talked about the threat that Trump poses and vowed to fight to his death to save US democracy from Trump. Rep. Cummings said, “This is a fight for the soul of our democracy. Nothing less. I’m going to work hard to make sure we save that democracy and I will fight until I die.”
Fight until I die. Amazing passion and determination on the part of Congressman Cummings.
He continued, “We have seen over and over again how the very pillars of democracy are being cut down. Peoples’s right to vote. You know that. Freedom of the press. You know that. CIA. FBI criticized. Over and over and over again.”
“Democrats aren’t backing down from the threat that Trump poses. They aren’t shrugging their shoulders and saying that’s the way it is. Democrats are fighting this president’s assault on democracy at every turn, and that attitude will serve them well if they will back all or part of Congress in 2018. Trump intends to dismantle and discredit democratic institutions. The President is not being normalized. Instead, Democrats are gearing up for a battle that could carry them through to victory in 2018.”
The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday evening blasted the panel’s chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, accusing the California Republican of “doing the work of the White House.”
“Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) went after Nunes and a group of House Republicans on MSNBC over a report earlier this week that revealed a number of GOP lawmakers have been meeting for weeks to investigate the FBI’s handling of a dossier containing unverified claims about President Trump‘s ties to Russia.”
“Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Wednesday that the firing of Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller would be a “gross abuse of power” and called for Congress to respond with “significant consequences” if President Donald Trump took that step.”
Warner, a Virginia Democrat, took to the Senate floor for a speech, in which he said the firing of Mueller or the pardoning of those charged in the special counsel’s investigation would represent crossing his “red line.”
“Any attempt by this President to remove special counsel Mueller from his position or to pardon key witnesses in any effort to shield them from accountability or shut down the investigation would be a gross abuse of power and a flagrant violation of executive branch responsibilities and authorities,” Warner said. “These truly are red lines and simply cannot allow them to be crossed.”
“Congress must make clear to the President that firing the special counsel or interfering with his investigation by issuing pardons of essential witnesses is unacceptable and would have immediate and significant consequences,” he added.
In addition 171 House Democrats have signed a letter in support of the Mueller investigation and warning the GOP of any chicanery.
This is a very perilous time. If there ever was a time to be woke-and NOT have a false sense of security-now is the time.
We need a Democratic Congress and we need it yesterday.
P.S. I’m Mike Sax, I’m running for Congress in the NY 2nd District and I’m a Hillary Clinton Democrat.
Meeting her recently was one of the biggest honors in my life to stand next to such a fine public servant and trailblazer. She seemed to like our Impeachment Train campaign t shirts too!
Think of the shirt as a one time investment in restoring legitimacy to this country.
