Liuba Grechen Shirley Gives American Prospect Risibly False History of NY2 Dem Primary Race
Welcome back! It’s your buddy Mike Sax again. Yes, I haven’t been blogging lately-call it the price of success. With my campaign for Congress taking off-we finally have a campaign manager and some organization I’ve had to somewhat alter my focus lately.
But don’t get me wrong-I’m still all in on ending Trump’s Manchurian Presidency if that’s where the facts lead after a Dem Congress does a real investigation and I am committed to ending our low wage epidemic of the last 16 years. Which is why I’m calling for a new New Deal or New Deal 2.0.
Now regarding my opponent, don’t get me wrong, I have a high regard for Liuba Grechen Shirley. I have assured her that if the voters choose her I will endorse her and do whatever’s necessary to see that she defeats Peter King. She promised me the same.
Ok-she DID have Elaine Dimasi try to call me back in October and ‘shock and awe’ me out of the race; you know ‘Liuba has this great organization with all these volunteers; you have like no chance.’
No, Elaine didn’t quite say I had no chance but that was the intimation. But a few days later Liuba assured me she’d support me if I’m the choice of Democrats in this district-after I had promised the same for her.
While I’m new to politics I’m a student of politics and so Liuba’s attempted shock and awe did not shock me. Though it was an interesting touch to have Elaine Dimasi-of all people-try to warn ME that MY campaign had no chance.
Since then Liuba’s strategy was to pretend that I’m not in the race-that it’s just her and light bulb guy Tim Gomes. This was certainly smart politics as Gomes is a wealthy opportunist who has switched his party numerous times and had no grassroots support.
But after Tim gave up and took his huge bank account home how would she characterize the race?
After her America Prospect interview we have our answer: still continue to pretend we’re not in this race.
“LIUBA GRECHEN SHIRLEY lives in the village of Amityville, in Long Island’s Suffolk County. Her congressman is Republican Peter King, 73, who has held the seat since 1986, when Shirley was in kindergarten. The district, whose boundaries have shifted, now has a slight Democratic registration majority. Yet King has never faced a formidable challenger. This is exactly the sort of district Democrats need to flip, if they are to take back the House—conventionally a long shot, but winnable.”
“Shirley, a 36-year-old mother of two toddlers who has worked for nonprofits focused on women’s and family issues, got so incensed after Trump’s election that she decided to revive the dormant local Democratic Party. Working with a few friends, she used a Facebook group to created a grassroots organization called New York’s 2nd District Democrats. Within a few months, it had 2,500 members. The group began looking for someone to run against King. The only person interested was a relatively conservative local businessman named Tim Gomes, who has switched back and forth from Republican to Democrat, and recently lent his own candidacy $1 million from his personal fortune. So Shirley began considering whether to run herself.”
Wow. I mean I understand taking some license and I acknowledge this is smart politics on Libua’s part but her little history of the NY2 Dem primary is an impressive work of creative fiction.
I mean what she said about Tim Gomes being the only person interested is demonstrably false and she knows it to be false. I took my first field poll vs. Peter King in March of 2017-and my second in June of that year. I chronicled both in this blog.
I met Liuba-and also DuWayne Gregory, the 2016 NY2 Dem candidate-in April of 2017. This was my first time ever speaking to anyone in local politics. But I figured I had to make it count so I told them both all about my March poll-the new one that had me beating King came out out a few months later.
To be sure they both knew about the poll but what was knew is they got to see the guy who’d conducted it.
Indeed, Liuba’s FB group she mentioned in the above quote-the New York 2nd District Democrats-had actually contacted me on FB just after the poll came out. Someone from the group told me they were interested in speaking to me. So I joined. But in time I realized that they loved to have as as many people as possible in the group but that only those who were in line with Liuba’s narrative got their posts published.
Because this is the truth about the Facebook group 2nd District Democrats-their name suggests that they are nonpartisan and about building up the party. The reality though is that page was started for the express purpose of promoting one candidate’s campaign-that of Liuba Grechen Shirley.
At Brightwater Library back in April then, I told her of my intention of running. She for her part-said nothing of her own intentions. Now her narrative is ‘Gee I started this little Facebook page never guessing that they’d all come back and DEMAND I RUN! Oh well, I guess I have no choice then…’
Like even now they claim that they are nonpartisan. Yet try posting about any other candidate but that of Liuba Grechen Shirley. It’s why my campaign has called for an examination of the NY District Two page’s bylaws.
So I’ve been in this race and Liuba knows it. Many of her supporters on the NY2 district FB page have sent snarky comments to me the last few weeks so they know perfectly well I’m in the race.
I wonder what led to the impression of American Prospect that she is the only candidate left in the race? Did her supporters play the sort of dirty pool they played in getting Claude Taylor to shill for them?
Claude Taylor of the mysterious legal defense fund that’s raised six figures though there are no cases against him and he has a pro bono lawyer? What does Liuba know about Claude’s legal defense fund-as he’s donated to her campaign?
And did Claude Taylor-at the direction of Liuba or her team-maliciously put in a false complaint against my Facebook ad account to get it disabled? The timing is very suspect.
