New York Two Democrats Ban Karen Pierce Reopening Questions About the Page’s Political Bias
Recently the New York Two Democrats Facebook page unceremoniously banned Karen Pierce. No question it was a rather heated conversation between Ms. Pierce and some other commentators about the state of the Democratic primary for the NY CD2 District.
It appears the moderators at the page felt Karen Pierce had gone over the line in expressing her point of view regarding Liuba Grechen Shirley’s use of her kids in her campaign.
No doubt this is a tough issue though opinions differ. Some do think maybe Ms. Shirley has straddled the line in using her young children in fundraising videos.
But on the other hand, it’s not like Shirley is the only one to ever get tough criticism in the comments section of this FB page. Quite to the contrary, I can’t even print half the things that some Liuba fans said about me in my own time as a candidate for NY2.
Yet no one banned Liuba Shirley supporter and investment banker Michael Bento for falsely claiming I’m mentally ill just because he didn’t appreciate my right to express my own point of view. To the contrary others came and said that maybe I should be banned for arguing with Bento.
Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of better things to do than argue with ignorant trolls like Bento-who claims to be an expert on everything but then was falsely claiming I ran in 2016 based on my FEC filing. Which shows that while he claims to know ‘everything about the law’ as someone at an investment bank he can’t even read a simple FEC form.
And this is the real problem about New York Two Democrats: are they an impartial page that is for all Democrats in the district-which their name would seem to suggest?-or are they actually just a platform for one particular candidate-Liuba Grechen Shirley?
Because what’s clear is that
1. Liuba is at least one of the founders of the page. She was running the page until she formally announced her campaign.
2. During this entire primary the moderators only allow information-including links to donate-regarding Libua’s campaign. I tried plenty of times to post about my own campaign and-of course-was never approved.
Then the page endorsed her without screening me or any other candidate. This choice was only made by the members of the steering committee not the rank and file who got no choice in the matter.
When questioned, different members have given conflicting explanations. Some have insisted-falsely-that the page has NOT endorsed her. Some also falsely claimed that while articles about her campaign were posted no fundraising links were posted.
Others like Mr. Bento have argued that ‘It’s a Facebook page and it can do anything it wants.’
Well, the laws and rules are on question, what’s ethical and above board is another. One legitimate grip about the page is that it’s lack of truth in advertising. It’s sort of bait and switch: the page’s name leads you to think that it’s for all Democrats in the NY2 district but the actual practice of the moderators is all about promoting just one candidate.
And this is strange behavior for a group that claims to care so much about an ‘open process’ and no ‘secret deals.’ Why then did they not speak with me and my campaign manager about my own campaign and my own plans for our district?
As for the applicable law, that’s a grey area too. Is the New York Two Democrats really just a FB page?
In light of their treatment of Karen Pierce I’m going to re-up a media release I put out regarding the New York Two Democrats back in late December:
PRESS RELEASE 12/29/17
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MIKE SAX CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY, INVESTIGATION OF NY 2ND DISTRICT DEMOCRATIC ENDORSEMENT OF FOUNDER, Liuba Grechen Shirley for Congress
“Bay Shore, NY- Mike Sax, Democratic Candidate in New York’s 2nd Congressional District, is asking the NY 2nd District Democrat Group for a written structure including rules on how the group votes on candidates, who the voting members are and what are the requirements to be a voting member.”
“I find the fact the founder of the group somehow becomes that group’s endorsed candidate without screening any other candidate to be at best “smoke and mirrors” and at worst “a dirty political trick.” Mike Sax stated.
“New York’s 2nd District Democrats organization has made endorsements in the past, without being officials constituted as a PAC or 501c4. Liuba Grechen Shirley claims her founding of the group is one of her biggest accomplishments as a political activist. How is it that a group can endorse a candidate without letting its members know how a candidate is endorsed and what that procedure are? If she’s making these closed door decisions with FB groups, what else is she hiding? As a Democrat, I want to see transparency, that’s why I am demanding full disclosure or the group to rescind their endorsement.”
In light of their treatment of Karen Pierce-compared with others who have sharply criticized OTHER CANDIDATES-we need to see their bylaws.
